Benefits of Making Your Own Chicken Jerky for Dogs at Home

One of the reasons why chicken jerky is such a good treat option for dogs is that it is high in protein. Protein is an essential nutrient for dogs of all ages, but it is vital for puppies who are growing and developing at a rapid pace. Puppies need more protein than adult dogs because their bodies are constantly rebuilding muscle tissue—and what better way to fuel that growth than with some delicious chicken jerky?

Another reason why chicken jerky makes a great treat option for dogs is that it is relatively low in calories. This means that you can feel good about giving your pup a few treats throughout the day without having to worry about them packing on the pounds. And since chicken jerky is also high in flavor, your pup will be just as happy with a few small pieces as they would be with one large treat.

Finally, chicken jerky is a good treat option for dogs because it contains no artificial ingredients or fillers. This means that you can feel confident knowing that your pup is getting nothing but pure, wholesome goodness in every bite. And what could be better than that?

What You'll Need:

-Jerky seasoning (I like this one)

-Ziploc bags or an airtight container

Step One: Cut the Chicken into Strips

Start by cutting the chicken into strips that are about 1/4-inch thick and 3-inches long. If your chicken breasts are particularly large, you may need to cut them into smaller pieces so that they will fit in your dehydrator.

Step Two: Season the Chicken

Next, it's time to season the chicken. I like to use a pre-made jerky seasoning because it makes things a lot easier, but you can also make your own seasoning blend if you prefer. Simply sprinkle the seasoning over the chicken strips, using as much or as little as you like. If using a pre-made blend, follow the package directions for how much to use. Once the chicken is seasoned, give it a good toss so that all pieces are evenly coated. Let the chicken sit for 10 minutes so that the seasoning has a chance to absorb.

Step Three: Dehydrate the Chicken

Dehydrating chicken is easy with a dehydrator. Just place the strips on the dehydrator racks, ensuring they're not touching or overlapping. Set your dehydrator to 165 degrees Fahrenheit and let it run for about 4 hours, or until the chicken is completely dry and brittle. Once the jerky is done, let it cool completely before storing in an airtight container or Ziploc bag. It will keep for up to 2 weeks stored in a cool, dry place.

FAQS About Homemade Chicken Jerky for Dogs

Is it safe to make chicken jerky at home?

The answer to this question is yes! As long as you follow a few simple safety guidelines, there's no reason why you can't make delicious and nutritious chicken jerky treats right in your own kitchen. First, make sure you start with fresh, raw chicken breasts. Second, slice the chicken into thin strips - no more than 1/4 inch thick. Third, cook the chicken strips until they're completely dry - there should be no pink meat remaining. Finally, let the strips cool completely before giving them to your dog. And that's it! Just four simple steps and you'll have homemade chicken jerky that's safe and healthy for your pup.

What kind of chicken should I use?

For the best results, use boneless, skinless chicken breasts. thighs or tenders. You can certainly use other cuts of chicken, but these tend to be the leanest and therefore will result in the most tender final product. Avoid using ground chicken or chicken with bones as these will be more difficult to slice thinly and can be dangerous for your dog if they're not cooked properly.

Can I flavor the chicken any way I want?

Of course! One of the great things about making your own dog treats at home is that you can customize them however you like. If your dog loves peanut butter, try adding a little bit of natural peanut butter to the mix. Or if they prefer a savory treat, add in some shredded cheese or diced bacon. Get creative and have fun with it! Your pup will thank you for it.
